Volume is a series of works varying in scale, from a starting point of using a single unit (ball) to projects using many thousands. Murphy's intention is to reappropriate existing objects and use them to explore perceptions of art and public spaces/public realm. The work allows discussion and dialogue on environments and spaces that we use and see on a daily basis but take for granted. It also explores situations that people interact with art.
The balls are manufactured for use in children's soft play areas; '... the juxtoposition of something intrinsically fun against our 'serious' and 'adult' environments was an interesting direction to explore'.
The pieces raise questions of art as commodity. The work is rooted strongly in Murphy's core themes as an artist; using familiar objects and environments he alters the context so they appear simultaneously both familiar and unfamiliar, encouraging and stimulating a sense of questioning from the viewer.
